Discovering Knowledge

"It is not enough to know that students differ in their ability to think critically and make decisions about what to do or what to believe.  Effective teaching of critical thinking comes when you create a climate for learning where a student would agree with the statement: 'This assignment is hard, but I can do it'" (Burden & Byrd, 185).

My current Action Research Project (ARP) is underway, and it examines the reception of Shakespearean sonnets compared to modern music.  While in my second to last semester of graduate school, I discovered that my ARP was not immediately needed for the student I was tutoring.  That student needed remediation in vocabulary. With my professor's recommendation and support, I adapted to her needs and designed an ARP entirely around her.  I tested several ideas, in an attempt to find a method that worked.  I finally discovered the Frayer model (finding personal connections to words or ideas through dissection) worked well with this student's needs.  Please click on the link below to view my ARP presentation.
